About APS – Board of
Education Members
The Board of Education is the official body representing the citizens of Akron
on all matters of public education. The Board is non-partisan and non-sectarian.
Its members are elected at-large for four-year terms.
The 2008 officers and committee chairs are:

Linda F.R. Omobien
(Term to 12/31/09)
Linda F.R. Omobien began serving her first
term with the Board of Education in 1994
and is serving her fourth term. She is currently the
Board of Education President. |
|
Omobien is a doctoral candidate at The
University of Akron where she also received her master's degree.
She received her bachelor's degree from Alcorn State University.
Omobien has worked as a mental health administrator for more
than 20 years for local agencies. She is presently a manager at
Community Support Services Inc. Omobien is very active in
professional, civic and community organizations.
Omobien was selected as the 2006
president of the Ohio School Boards Association. She is the first urban school district member from the
Northeast region to achieve this distinction. The OSBA serves
3,500 members across the state. In 2005, Omobien earned an Award
of Achievement from the Ohio School Boards Association.

Rev. Dr. Curtis T. Walker, Sr.
(Term to 12/31/11)
Rev. Walker was first elected effective
January 2000 and is serving his second term. He is currently the
Personnel and Staff Relations chair. |

Rev. Walker is the pastor of Wesley Temple
African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. He came to Akron in
1992 from Montgomery, Ala., where he also served as a pastor. |

Jason Haas
(Term to 12/31/09)
Jason Haas is serving his first term
(effective January 2008) with
the Akron Board of Education. He is currently the
Accountability and Strategic Planning chair.

Haas is a research analyst for the County of
Summit's Department of Development. In this role, he guides the
department's research and information archival functions, including
that of original data collection. Haas has a master's degree
in sociology from The University of Akron. He taught research
methods at UA and Kent State University and was a research analyst
at the UA's Roy C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics. |

James Hardy
(Term to 12/31/09)
James Hardy began serving his first term with the Akron Board of
Education in 2006. He is currently the
Board of Education Vice President and the Finance and Budgeting chair.

Hardy
is one of the youngest elected Board members in the history of
Akron Public Schools. He holds a B.S. in Political Science
and Criminal Justice from The University of Akron and is employed by Ohio
Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner. He is a proud
product of Akron Public Schools, graduating from Firestone High
School in 2002.

Kirt Conrad
(Term to 12/31/11)
Kirt Conrad was named to the Board of
Education in December 2005 to fill the unexpired term of Loretta
Haugh. He is currently the Buildings and Grounds/Student
Services and Security chair. |

Conrad holds a bachelor of arts degree from
Kent State University and a master's degree in public
administration from The University of Akron. He is employed by
the METRO Regional Transit Authority as the director of planning
and development Conrad is a
member of the Akron First Presbyterian Church and serves as a
board member for the Kenmore Development Partnership. He also
sits on the advisory board of the Firestone Park YMCA. Conrad
lives with his wife and daughter in Firestone Park.

Shelia Smith
(Term to 12/31/09)
Shelia Smith was elected effective January 2006 and is serving
her first term. She is currently
the Instructional Policy and Student Achievement chair.

Smith is a program coordinator
for the East Akron Community House’s Educational Development and
Guidance for Employment Program. She moved to Akron in 1986.
Smith graduated from Rayen High School in
Youngstown and went on to attend Youngstown State University.
Smith is a member of the American
Association of Christian Counselors and the National Associate
of Workforce Development Professionals. She has been married since 1973
and has four adult children (all graduates of Akron Public
Schools) and two
grandchildren.

Amy Reeves Grom
(Term to 12/31/11)
Amy Reeves Grom was elected effective January 2008 and is serving
her first term. She is currently
the Community Relations and Legislation chair.

Grom holds a bachelor
of music degree from The University of Akron and was a public
school teacher for ten years. She is now the proud parent of an
APS student. Grom is currently an active volunteer in many
community organizations including the Hereford/Highland Area
Blockwatch, Summit County Master Gardeners and Akron Council
PTA. |
