Cuts/Adjustments Keep Budget Balanced But Sacrifice Jobs and Student Programs
Ohio requires every school district to submit a five-year budget forecast with at least two years showing how the district will maintain a balanced budget. Over the past four years, APS balanced its budget by making annual cuts and curtailing spending. From 2001 to 2005, the district cut nearly $30 million including 400 job positions. With the loss of Issue 78 in November 2005 and Issue 1 in May 2006, the Board was forced to make even more budget reductions for the 2006-07 school year. New budget cuts of more than $13 million included 175 job positions and all student sports programs with the exception of varsity programs. Total budget cuts since 2001 are now more than $43 million, and more than 575 job positions have been eliminated. These cuts allow APS to balance the 2006 budget; but, unfortunately, the district still has a $9 million deficit in FY08.

Below are charts that outline more information about these cuts and the district budget (also, see the five-year budget - to view the form, download the free Acrobat reader).
