School of Practical Nursing
Why would you
become a Licensed Practical Nurse?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nursing as a whole
will soon be one of the top 10 fastest growing professions in
the United States. A licensed practical nurse (LPN) is an
integral part of nursing and assists in providing nursing care
in a variety of health care settings. The average hourly wage is
$16.
What does an LPN do?
An LPN works at the direction of a registered nurse, physician, dentist or
podiatrist. In addition to basic care, an LPN administers medications and
treatments; initiates and monitors intravenous solutions; reports adverse reactions to medications and treatments to the
charge nurse; contributes to the nursing assessment; assembles and uses
equipment such as catheters, tracheotomy tubes and oxygen suppliers; collects
samples such as urine, blood and sputum; verifies nursing care through written
documentation; and uses critical thinking/decision-making skills. An LPN also
acts as a patient advocate with respect to the rights, beliefs, property and
confidentiality of each patient.

Nursing invites you to enroll.

History
On September 30,
2001, the Akron School of Practical Nursing celebrated 50
years of nursing education. With the support of the Akron
Board of Education and community members, this school was
founded in 1951. To date, the school has over 4,000
graduates, many of whom remain in this area. Following are
the August 2001 comments from the graduation speaker and
former graduate of this school:
"I'm not sure how I first heard about nursing school, but I
always knew I wanted to be a nurse. Since I was already
married and had two small children, eleven months didn't
seem like a long time. When I graduated, I really thought I
would be a Licensed Practical Nurse forever. However, I
thought I could take better care of my patients and have
more job security if I furthered my education. I obtained a
BSN and an MSN from The University of Akron. After holding
several management positions on surgical units, I became a
Licensed Nursing Home Administrator. Now that I have student
nurses from the Akron School of Practical Nursing coming to
my facility, I can see that the same high standards exist
today that were present in 1979. The school's focus on
patient and family-centered care is still evident, and the
students assist us in providing quality care to our special
residents."
