Overview: Math Interventions Matrix

The Math Interventions Matrix is designed to help educators identify and implement interventions for students who are not learning and/or mastering the mathematics skills that they need to be successful from kindergarten through high school.

The Math Interventions Matrix identifies the following:

  • The knowledge, skills, and behaviors that represent effective mathematics instruction at the kindergarten through high school levels;
  • The critical math skills and concepts that students need to learn and master at particular grade levels addressed in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics;
  • How to recognize when students are falling behind in skills and/or concept areas to the degree that they need assistance;
  • The questions or assessment probes needed to determine the root causes of existing skill or concept gaps; and
  • The evidence- or research-based interventions needed to close these gaps and facilitate student mastery

The Math Interventions Matrix, consists of over 130 interventions and is intended to be a resource for all mathematics teachers to accelerate struggling learners to grade level competency. The interventions feature student probes, lesson descriptions and rationales, step-by-step instructions, teacher notes, possible lesson variations, and formative assessments to determine student success. Each lesson contains an “At a Glance” section listing the relevant Common Core State Standard and Mathematical Practices, grade level, estimated time required to teach the intervention, prerequisite student knowledge and vocabulary required, and materials and supplies needed
