The CCSSM is a response to the need for improved mathematical achievement, a competitive workforce in a global economy, and a desire to have common mathematical standards across the United States. The nation’s governors sanctioned the writing of the CCSSM. Three central writers were charged with the responsibility: William McCallum, Jason Zimba, and Phil Daro.
In June 2010, the State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards in mathematics. The standards will be effective in 2014-2015 when newly aligned assessments also will be implemented.
