What is MSDS? – Material Safety Data Sheet
The hazards associated with the chemicals used in the work place are found in the manufacturers’ MSDS. The MSDS contains information so that employees: 1. know how to protect themselves; 2. are aware of the hazardous materials in the workplace; and 3. know how to use chemical products safely. The MSDS provides more detail on the hazards associated with a chemical product that cannot be found on the product label. This information will include: 1. what the chemical is, the manufacturer and the chemical properties; 2. why the chemical is hazardous and the types of hazards associated with using the chemical; and 3. how to use the chemical safely. The MSDS is divided into sections. Employees should review the following sections when using chemical products in their work: PRODUCT ID, INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL DATA, FIRE AND EXPLOSION DATA, REACTIVITY DATA, HEALTH HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS, CONTROL MEASURES, INSTRUCTIONS. The following links contain the MSDS of products currently used in Akron Public Schools. Most of the MSDS listed are in the Adobe Acrobat .pdf format. Some, however, are in .html format. All .pdf files require the Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded free from the Adobe Web site. If you are working with a product and there is no MSDS, contact Robert Boxler at 330.761.2977.
