Fathers Walk 2010
This year's Fathers Walk (Take Your Child to School) will take place on Wednesday, September 22, with a goal of 10,000 fathers participating throughout the region. Fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, godfathers, cousins and other significant male caregivers are encouraged to take their children to school on this day. They should arrive 15-30 minutes before the starting bell, as some schools will have information and/or activities available. Please check with your school. Project GRAD Akron Bridge to Kindergarten
Project GRAD Akron is accepting applications for students to register for its Bridge to Kindergarten summer program, which runs from August 9-20, 2010. This literacy-based kindergarten readiness program is for students entering kindergarten at Crouse CLC, Rankin or Schumacher. Breakfast and lunch are included. The program will be held at Crouse CLC, 1000 Diagonal Road, from 8:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m. weekdays. For more information or to register, call 330.873.3329 or 330.761.3113.

Project GRAD Akron Ninth-Grade Summer Academy
Project GRAD Akron is accepting applications for students to register for its Ninth-Grade Summer Academy program, which runs from August 9-20, 2010. This is a transition program for incoming ninth-graders to Buchtel. Breakfast and lunch are included. The program will be held at Buchtel, 1040 Copley Road, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays. APS Raises $13,250 for Earthquake Victims
APS students and staff raised more than $13,000 for the American Red Cross Haiti earthquake relief fund. The district was one of 10 local organizations recently recognized for its efforts. Here’s a breakdown by school.

Youth Summer Employment Program
Akron Public Schools will participate in the 2010 Summer Youth Employment Program funded by Summit County Department of Job and Family Services. If you are eligible, you will be contacted in upcoming weeks. Requirements include:

Current APS high school student
Age 16-19
Previously employed in 2009 Summer Youth Employment program

APS Provides 12,004 Meals
Akron Public Schools provided 12,004 meals to people in need through the 2010 Harvest for Hunger Campaign. In honor of its participation, APS earned a Certificate of Appreciation from the United Way. For more information, visit www.liveunited.org/.
