  • Fathers Walk 2010
    This year's Fathers Walk (Take Your Child to School) will take place on Wednesday, September 22, with a goal of 10,000 fathers participating throughout the region. Fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, godfathers, cousins and other significant male caregivers are encouraged to take their children to school on this day. They should arrive 15-30 minutes before the starting bell, as some schools will have information and/or activities available. Please check with your school.   • "Kenmore's Greatest Generations" Patriot Day
    The Kenmore High School Class of 1945 will hold its 65-year "Greatest Generations" reunion on Saturday, September 11, 2010, from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Kenmore High School. Kenmore classes from 1930 through 2010 are invited to the celebration, which will honor the sons and daughters of Kenmore High School who served in the Armed Forces in all wars. Lunch is $16 per person (Kenmore graduates from the 1930s are free). Cameramen will film the event and interview attendees for a DVD (which may be ordered now for $20).   • Summit for Kids Training Workshops
    A Summit for Kids workshop day is scheduled for Friday, August 20, 2010, at the John S. Knight Center, 77 E. Mill St., Akron, from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The workshops will cover information on providing services to children and families in the community. CEUs have been approved for social worker licensing hours, and CLEs are pending (for CLE registration, contact Paula Andrasko at paulaa@akronbar.org or 330.436.0118). Registration is required at www.surveymonkey.com/s/2TZTGTZ. The training is co-sponsored and accredited by Summit County Children Services.
  • Summit for Kids Luncheon and Report
    Summit for Kids will hold a luncheon meeting on Friday, August 20, 2010, at noon at the John S. Knight Center, 77 E. Mill St., Akron. The topic is "Report to the Governor and Chief Justice on Summit for Children." Tickets are $25 each or $250 per table.   • "Building FIRM FOUNDATIONS for Your Children" Workshop
    August is Child Support Awareness Month; and the Child Support Enforcement Agency is holding a FIRM FOUNDATIONS workshop on Saturday, August 14, 2010, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, 100 W. Cedar St., Akron. The event is open to parents and caretakers but is not an amnesty event. Information will be provided on paternity establishment, child/medical support order establishment, visitation and mediation, and fatherhood initiative. For more information, call 330.643.2765.
  • Project GRAD Akron Bridge to Kindergarten
    Project GRAD Akron is accepting applications for students to register for its Bridge to Kindergarten summer program, which runs from August 9-20, 2010. This literacy-based kindergarten readiness program is for students entering kindergarten at Crouse CLC, Rankin or Schumacher. Breakfast and lunch are included.   • Project GRAD Akron Ninth-Grade Summer Academy
    Project GRAD Akron is accepting applications for students to register for its Ninth-Grade Summer Academy program, which runs from August 9-20, 2010. This is a transition program for incoming ninth-graders to Buchtel. Breakfast and lunch are included. The program will be held at Buchtel, 1040 Copley Road, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. weekdays.   • Share Careers in STEM
    You can inspire tomorrow's work force! The National Inventors Hall of Fame School® ... Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Learning is looking for local business leaders to share their STEM career and industry with students in the fifth, sixth and seventh grades this fall. During this half-hour session, you can share interests, talents and abilities to encourage students beyond the classroom.   • Early Learning Program Needs Peer Models
    The Early Learning Program is looking for "peer models" for its Special Needs Preschool. The peer models have to be three years old by September 30 and be able to demonstrate strong language and social skills. The program is based at Stewart, but there are classrooms located in other elementary schools. For more information or to register, call Melissa Milford at 330.873.3396.
  • All America Bridge Construction Information
    Improvements will be made to the All America Bridge this year, including a new road deck, decorative guard railings, and improved lighting and signage. Work began on Monday, March 29, when contractors closed the northbound lanes. During reconstruction on the northbound lanes, the southbound lanes will remain open. Once the northbound lanes are complete and open to traffic, the southbound lanes will close (anticipated to occur during mid-to-late summer). The recommended detour is Perkins Street to North Howard Street to Olive Street near St. Thomas Hospital. Signs are posted to guide motorists through the detour.
  • Ashley Quarterman Memorial Fund
    The East Akron Community House/EDGE Program established a memorial fund on behalf of Ashley Quarterman, the 18-year-old Buchtel senior who died in February 2010. Donations can be made to the Ashley Quarterman Memorial Fund at any FirstMerit bank branch. For more information, contact the East Akron Community House/EDGE Program at 330.773.6838.
  • Ellet/North Early Childhood Education Preschool Programs
    Ellet and North high schools' early childhood education programs provide preschool for children ages 3-5 (potty-trained only), Tuesday through Friday, 9:25-11:40 a.m. The cost is $70/month, and the program is licensed by the Ohio Department of Education.   • Shelter Care therapeutic Foster Care Program for At-Risk Youth
    The Shelter Care Therapeutic Foster Care Program provides foster care for Summit County-area at-risk youth ages 11-17. Safe Landing is the crisis emergency shelter for youth in Summit County and provides free drop-in or scheduled counseling with licensed professional counselors.   • Promoting Adolescents Through Health Services Program
