Art Awards


  • Garfield student Erica Grimes took first place overall (and first place in mixed media) in the Art Awards30th Annual Congressional Art Competition. Her work, a mixed media piece titled "The Girl with the Black Eye," will be displayed for a year at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. She also earned second place in mixed media with "Martin Amis Study."Another Garfield student, Jessica Hamad, took second place overall and first place in the painting category with her painting titled "The Green Sweater." Other category winners included: Hamad who took third place in the mixed media category for a piece titled "Slumber"; Bounlong Thammavongsa of Garfield, who took third place in the painting category with "Self Portrait in Shawl"; and Kristen Mitzel of Firestone, who took third place in photography with "Bridge."

    Following are the APS award winners in the 58th Annual Northeast Central Ohio Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibit, featuring artwork from middle and high school students in Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas and Wayne counties:

  • Four honorable-mention awards were won by Miller South fifth-graders in the Children's Service Board slogan and poster contest titled "A Family is ..." Maria Finney, Elise Helms, Isabelle Nutt and Jacob Petit were recognized at the Akron Art Museum.
  • Resnik CLC classes received three first-place awards in the 2012 Scholastic Composer's Content sponsored by the Children's Concert Society. Their original compositions were "I Don't Want To!" (Kimberly Dorsey's first-graders), "Talking Drums" (Carolyn Porter's third-graders) and "Dueling Guitars" (Anne Pipps' fourth-graders). Resnik CLC has more than 25 first-place winners in the last 12 years. The music teacher is Candee Minchin.
