District Awards


  • District AwardsFour East CLC 7-8 Campus students are winners in the Safety Kids 2012 Poster Contest sponsored by the Summit County Prosecutor's Office. Out of 1,431 entries, the winners were Taiana Cook, Montazia Davis, Darchella Woodall and Jennifer Zushin. They will find out their prize level at a November 2 ceremony at the Akron Main Library. Their art teacher is Karl Konigsberger.
  • Litchfield, North and Voris CLC were winners in Keep Akron Beautiful's Mixed Paper Drive. These schools recycled the most paper per pound, per student: Litchfield, 6.4 pounds per student (equals two tons); North, 7.11 pounds per student (equals 2.55 tons); and Voris CLC, 16.2 pounds per student (equals 2.5 tons). Voris CLC earned a school-wide pizza party, and North won a $500 cash prize courtesy of the River Valley Paper Company and a tour of the company plant for 50 students and faculty. Overall, 34.5 tons (68,870 pounds) of paper was recycles, a 1,000-pound increase over 2010; and 71 percent of the APS student population participated. Trash bins were located at 15 schools.
  • The following APS students were selected to be honored at the February 15 Do the Right Thing ceremony: Andrayah Autrey, grade 7, Jennings CLC; Shayanna Bratcher, grade 5, Findley CLC; Avery and Tristan Clarkston, grades 2 and 4, Harris; Christien Cunningham, grade 10, Garfield; Anthony Goins Jr., grade 9, Ellet; I'Yaunna Hill, grade 5, Essex; Erika Jacobs, grade K, Bettes; Sawyer Nauert, grade 5, Rimer CLC; Mary Nicodemus, grade 7, STEM School; Sebastian Ortiz, grade 8, Jennings CLC; Passionae Jackson, grade 4, Barber; Keenan Philpott, grade 7, Roswell Kent; Amber Roebuck, grade 5, Essex; Daekwan Sanders, grade 3, Rankin; Tiana Slayton, grade 5, Findley CLC; and Jeremiah Wallace, grade 4, Findley CLC.
  • The following Miller South students earned honors in the Holocaust Arts and Writing Contest: writingKatherine Klika (first place) and Klaire Morgenstern (second place); visual artMolly Chelovitz, Zoe Dudack and Mason Lorch (honorable mentions); and multimediaBree Chambers, Mason Scott and Grace Thanasiu (third place). Klika's artwork will be on display at the main branch of the Akron Summit County Public Library from April 5-May 4. She and adviser Bonnie Wachter will travel to Washington, D.C., to visit the U.S. Holocaust Museum in May.
  • Resnik CLC and STEM students took first place in their grade levels in the 59th annual Scholastic Composers Contest sponsored by the Children's Concert Society of Akron. Winners were: Resnik CLC – Kimberly Dorsey's first-graders, Anne Pipps' fourth-graders and Carolyn Porter's third-graders; and STEM – Kimberly Shama-Hanna's Composing With Technology Club (grades 5-7). Students will present their pieces on Tuesday, April 24, at the Akron Civic Theatre.
