  • Regional AwardsSixth-grade STEM student Noah Carillon won Time Warner Cable's "Coolest Creations" contest and a $1,000 savings bond with his "Water Dog" invention. The "Water Dog" is a device that makes it easier for people with back problems to fill their pets' water dishes. Voting for 10 student inventors ran through June on channel 411. The "Coolest Creations" contest is part of the cable company's Connect a Million Minds initiative, promoting science, technology, engineering and math in education and careers.

  • Garfield's orchestra will play in the 2011-12 "Fab Friday" series sponsored by the Kent State University Hugh A. Glauser School of Music Division of Bands on Friday, October 28. Fab Friday programs offer the opportunity to bring talented school instrumental music groups to the KSU campus to work with its conducting staff, applied faculty, graduate assistants, and graduate and under-graduate students. High school students get the opportunity to refine playing skills and prepare for concert or large-group adjudicated events. Garfield's orchestra conductor is Alissa Fullen.
  • Essex first-grade teacher, Anita M. Pinciotti, was recently named to the 2011 Summit County All-County Teaching Team. Ms. Pinciotti has been teaching for 27 years. She is on the Social Committee for the Oasis Volunteer Program, a mentor for first-grade teachers, a liaison for the Gifted/Talented Program, on the advisory committee for all-day kindergarten, and a tutor for the Akron After School tutoring program for reading and math.
  • Hyre CLC students were big winners in the Summit County Prosecutor's Safety Calendar Contest, winning 17 of the 48 prizes. At the awards ceremony, Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh handed out the following awards: grand prizeTanner Baker; first placeEmma Dudones, Taylor Ford, Tori Golden and Caleb Minard; second placeTaylor Abbe, Shelby Fisher, Ryan Hanlon, Hunter Hockman and Sarah Remmy; third placeZakary Kisner and Essence Martin; and honorable mentionEmily Clay, Sarah Denham, Emily Knight, Daniel Mason and Slobodanka Petrovic. Tanner's poster will be on the front cover of the 2012 calendar, and first-place winning artwork will be featured on full pages inside the calendar. The grand-prize and first-place winners will have their artwork on billboards through the city. The art teacher is Patricia Bodine.
  • Patricia Jawyn's French III and IV classes at Ellet placed first during French Immersion Day at The University of Akron. The Ellet students competed with their skit titled "Pas chez nous" against students from eight regional high schools, including St. Vincent-St. Mary and Walsh.
  • The following North DECA students were recognized for their placement at the District 11 competition held at Kent State University: first place – Aleyah Carmona (marketing management), Ryan Cantrell (business finance), Travis Long (business services), Jalen Murry (accounting applications) and Christine Rudd (apparel & accessories); second place – Shane Beers (marketing management), Jason Black (business services), Corey Harrington (human resources management), Kiara Morales (retail & merchandising) and Sando Pelima (sports and entertainment); third place Dalibor Jagic (automotive services); fourth place – Melinda Norris (quick serve); and fifth place – Aaron Cuckler (marketing management), Damian Grant (quick serve), Luis Mendez (retail & merchandising), Trey McKee (restaurant & food service) and Derveral Tarver-Luster (apparel & accessories). These students will compete at the state level for an opportunity to attend the International Career Development Conference. The DECA adviser is Eric Mathews.
  • APS students from the commercial art program and Firestone's Project-Lead-the-Way Engineering Design class participated in a Duct Tape House Competition, sponsored by Habitat for Humanity and the Home Builders Association and featured at the 2012 Akron Home and Flower Show. The students used cardboard and blue, green and gray duct tape. The commercial art class took three awards: "Best High School Team" by People's Choice and the Professional Judges and the house "Most Closely Resembling a Summit County Habitat" – Darice Allred and Michael Simmons (Firestone), Stacie Heller (Garfield), Ja'Shon Moss (East CLC), and David Robbins and Joshua Swain (North); "Most Creative" by People's Choice – Leanna Sherman, Steven Edwards and Tyler Rieman (Firestone); and "Most Creative" by Judges' Choice – Joshua Hoffman, Alexander Maguire and Tyler Stallsmith (Firestone). Their teachers are Kay Dreslinski (commercial art) and Daniel Spak (engineering).
  • Litchfield sixth-grader Kendall Miller earned second place in the Child and Family Awareness Month contest for her Storybook entry. Her teacher is Jenny Jurkovic.
  • Miller South was one of 27 schools from Cuyahoga, Portage and Summit counties to participate in the Power of the Pen regional tournament, with the following qualifying students: Emma Antal, Joseph Antal, Emily Borodkin, Rueben Durkee, Stasha Gacpar, Jessica Hall, Graham Sell and Natalie Steigmann-Gall. Emma Antal won the Best of Round Award, and Natalie Steigmann-Gall earned 11th place in the eighth-grade category as well as the Best of the Best Award. Their adviser is Bonnie Wachter.
