APS awarded $3.2 million in School Improvement Grants

Jun 30, 2011

Akron Public Schools is working diligently to implement groundbreaking strategies that work to transform our schools, provide greater opportunity for our students and increase the pipeline of talented graduates to the community.

As part of that plan, APS applied for and was recently awarded School Improvement Grants to transform the program model at Buchtel/Perkins CLC into Akron's first New Tech High School and implement successful STEM programming for Bridges Learning Center and Akron Opportunity Center.

The grant funds include:

  • Buchtel High School, $1,200,930.49
  • Bridges Learning Center, $882,092.14
  • Akron Opportunity Center, $1,150,943.87

"This is a unique opportunity to transform our schools and ultimately improve outcomes for our graduates," said Superintendent David W. James. "We're primed to use these grants to bring deep change to the schools involved and carry out new, cutting-edge strategies throughout the district."
