News – Storyboard AECHS: The Best of Both
Worlds
In
the state of Ohio, nine out of 10 students finish high school. From that nine,
five go on to college; but only two will graduate.
Yes, only two will graduate.
If you question the reason behind this dilemma you’ll probably hear phrases
using words like “finances,” “money,” “loans” and “not enough.”
A new partnership could make a difference to hundreds of APS students.

to offer.
This fall, Akron Public Schools and The University of Akron provided a world of
resources and opportunity by opening the doors to Akron Early College High
School.
Akron Early College High School is a high school within the district that allows
students to earn an associate’s degree or up to 72 hours of credit toward a
bachelor’s degree. Classes are taught at The University of Akron by a
combination of high school teachers and college professors.
And, best of all, it’s free to qualified APS students.
“I think they almost understand how lucky they are,” said principal Tom Forbes
with a huge grin on his face. “They’re getting the best of both worlds -- high
school fun and college credit, for free.”
One could easily describe Akron Early College High School as a school without
walls. Although ninth-graders will
primarily follow a high school schedule, they will have the full resources of
The University if Akron at their fingertips.
The school’s first class of 99 students are currently wrapping up their first
semester. Most will complete 5 hours of college credit by the end of this first
year and some will complete 8 hours – saving an average of $2,500-$4,000 in
annual college expenses.
“This is a tremendous responsibility and honor for this first round of
students,” said Forbes. “It’s truly amazing.”
