News – Storyboard Jump Start Greatness If you had a conversation with Clarence Berry about East High School, you’d learn its graduates have achieved more than just a high school diploma. You’d discover its alumni is comprised of NASA interstellar experts, award-winning educators, entrepreneurs, Olympians, civil rights activists and DNA analysts. You’d hear stories of great success that were only made possible by teachers, administrators and coaches who cared. But, more importantly, you’d discover a strong desire to keep it that way.
Through East High Alumni’s Jump Start Scholarship program, more than $125,000 has been raised over the last three years to keep stellar career achievement a reason to become an East High grad. Donations from graduates, usually named in memory of a loved one, are awarded to students who need financial assistance to attend college — students whose mission is to excel and achieve greatness. “When people look back, they realize high school is the place their personality and character were formed,” said Berry. “I became who I am today because of East High School.” Currently, the organization is asking class members to agree to a 10-year commitment by making donations totaling $1,000 per year. Through this commitment, the program’s goal is to raise a total of $300,000 by 2010 and grant 30 scholarships each year. “We’re building a pyramid now,” said Berry. “The more people who get involved now, the faster we can award all these deserving students.” |
