News – Storyboard Forest Hill Gets Ready for a
New Look
Next fall, students from Forest Hill Elementary
School, as well as students in kindergarten though grade eight, will begin the
school year just as they have in the past. They will study their school supply
lists, organize their pencil pouches and march in to meet their new teachers.
But not everything will be the same.
Students will begin class in a brand new building and sport a new style of
clothing — uniforms.
“It couldn’t be a better time for a fresh, new start,” said Christina Cleveland,
Forest Hill PTA President. “The uniform policy will instill so much pride and
self-respect in our students.”
The new policy, which begins with the 2008-09 school year, takes the guesswork
out of dressing for school and requires students to wear a polo-style shirt in
colors of blue, white, yellow and two additional colors designated by each
school’s principal. The policy also calls for classic uniform slacks, skirts or
jumpers in navy blue or khaki.
A few parents say uniforms lack variety and take away a student’s individuality.
“I don’t understand why parents judge individuality on clothing,” said
Cleveland. “There are so many other ways to judge individuality, like the
academics, arts and music.”
The Akron Board of Education began exploring a school uniform policy in early
2007 and approved the policy last December. The decision was based on these
principles:
1. Focus students on learning, not clothing
2. Enhance school safety and promote good behavior
3. Bridge socio-economic differences between children
4. Instill pride in Akron citizens and APS families in their public schools
5. Eliminate inappropriate dress trends at an early age
6. Produce cost savings for participating families
