Helen E. Arnold CLC: This is Yours

Helen E. Arnold CLC: This is YoursA building is made of more than four walls, glass, brick, a roof and a door. You don’t have to be an architect to understand the strong effect buildings have on our communities and why they matter.

The newly opened Helen E. Arnold Community Learning Center is no exception.

The 62,572 sq. ft. center is building its reputation on the foundation of community, stuffing its lockers with pride and decorating its hallways with those who are excited to create a school framed by success.

If you ask Principal LaMonica Davis, she’ll tell you a clean, healthy and safe school provides students, faculty and staff with an environment conducive to learning and working. This philosophy is visible when you walk though the doors of the Helen E. Arnold CLC.

Helen E. Arnold CLC: This is YoursAt first glance, you’ll notice a distinct attention to detail, which includes wood treatments on the doors, inviting colors on the walls and even handmade desks with artistic flair. The goal was to create spaces that, by their appearance, color, texture, equipment and arrangement, make students want to linger, learn and create a home away from home.

Davis’ strong vision for her school comes from her strong vision for the community — the very community in which she grew up.

“We’re ready for a change,” said Davis. “It’s time to make everyone feel like a family and be a part of their school.”

Helen E. Arnold CLC: This is YoursSince 1981, the neighborhood has been without an elementary school. The city of Akron, the Akron Urban League and Akron Public Schools have partnered like never before to build a truly 21st-century community learning center.

With inviting colors, open corridors and comfortable classrooms, Davis proclaims the new center is simply breathtaking.

“This is yours,” says Davis. “Protect it.”
