Turn on Success

North's PLATO Computer Technology ProgramStarting this school year, students at North High School have a new opportunity to make up for failed class credits and a new way to become engaged within the classroom.

Hoping to promote an increased graduation rate, increased OGT scores and increased success, the high school, among others in the district, adapted the use of PLATO computer technology to reach its students on a more individualized basis.

Initial use of PLATO began more than five years ago at APS when it was used primarily in Career-Based Intervention for remediation and preparation for the OPT.

Using PLATO computer technology, one teacher can monitor 30 students studying 30 different subjects, while each student works at his or her own pace.

North High School’s primary CBI (Career-Based Intervention) instructor, Katherine Givens, has seen the implementation of PLATO throughout other high schools within the district and is extremely pleased with the students’ response.

“Students view computers in a very positive light,” said Givens. “They [computers] carry a fun attitude with them that needs to be carried into the classroom.”

Currently, the main focus at North High School with PLATO will be the “credit recovery” program that requires no added classes, no added teachers and no added stress.

The credit recovery program is one of the many functions of PLATO computer technology that is increasingly moving into many APS schools.

“We want to provide our students with a stronger foundation,” said Givens. “We’re using this technology to bridge gaps in learning so our students can keep moving forward.”
