News – Storyboard The Meaning Behind the
Mission
It was a wet, rainy, sloppy morning in April, the kind
of day when a few more hours of sleep would have worked miracles.
I yawned, gulped down a hot cup of coffee, put a smile on my face, zipped up my
waterproof boots and drove 10 miles to Sam Salem to meet with principal Elaine
Marcius. My mission? I wanted to find out how she felt about her upcoming move
to the brand new Sam Salem Community Learning Center.
I met Marcius in her office at the old Sam Salem building. She shared a
scrapbook of photographs that depicted students and teachers from the past 86
years.
When I glanced up to ask her a question, I saw tears in her eyes. She was so
overwhelmed with the move to a beautiful new school, she was literally
speechless. She said, “Let’s just go over.” We trudged through the mud — thank
goodness for my waterproof boots — and she let us into the side door of the new
building.
A stranger would have walked into the construction site and seen nothing but all
of the things that were still unfinished. We walked over power tools and paint
buckets, around ladders, and under scaffolding. But, with a look of awe, Marcius
saw only the function behind the chaos.
We looked into each and every room, and she pointed out new amenities that were
never available to her students in the old building.
“My art students will have a kiln.”
“My special education students will have a therapy swing.”
“My first-graders will each have their own locker.”
“My librarian will have a sink.”
“Every room and every corner will bring so many new learning opportunities to
our students,” said Marcius. “We are truly excited.”
Mission accomplished.
