Pint-size know-it-alls
Adage proves true for Windemere students ― You really do learn it all in kindergarten.

Windemere students show what they've learned in kindergartenKermit the Frog once famously lamented that it's not easy being green. But for Windemere kindergartener Adam, green is the only way to be.

That's because green is good in Judy "Zippy" Silverman's class. Silverman's "behavior board" is color coded to illustrate student behavior every day. Green is good. Yellow is a warning. Red loses a privilege at school and at home. Pink earns you a phone call to mom and dad from Silverman's cell phone. And purple? Purple lands you in Principal Patricia Durkin's office.

After talking with 16 six-year-olds about the most important things they've learned during their first year of school, you walk away with a solid reminder about some of life's simplest lessons ― everything from the importance of following rules to the best way to make friends.

Marina recommends the blunt approach. "I just walk up and say, 'Will you be my friend?' That usually works."

For Haley, Brandon, Matthew, Jonathan and Jacob, new-found reading skills top the list of greatest skills learned this year. Marina prefers math to reading, while Kathryn has a proclivity for painting.

Other tips they've gleaned during their first school year include:

  • Reading makes you smarter. Don't be afraid to sound out the words if you have trouble.
  • If you're scared to try something new, find a friend who's done it already. They can give you pointers.
  • Sometimes it's better to walk away.
  • Follow the rules to keep safe.
  • No kicking. Just keep your hands and your feet to yourself. That goes for pinching, too.
  • Don't talk to strangers. That's the "goodest" rule, according to Haley.
  • Let the teacher know when she forgets something.
  • Don't wait for your friends in the bathroom. Otherwise, you'll stand around waiting for each other all day; and no one will ever leave.

For Adam, however, his greatest bit of wisdom might make Kermit cringe ― it's good to be green.
