News – Storyboard Safe Delivery at Windemere
It’s winter, and the cold air is bringing in red noses and jam-packed
street corners loaded with parents who are eager to see their children arrive at
school safely without the shivers.
At Windemere Elementary School, these busy mornings not only make people long
for hot chocolate and soft mittens but safer streets.
That’s where the PTA’s “Safe Delivery Zone” enters.
Parents and adult helpers are on duty from 8-8:30 each morning through rain,
sleet, snow, blizzards or hotter than heck weather on Windemere Avenue.
Parents direct the cars to the “Safe Delivery Zone,” where a parent volunteer
opens the car door at curbside so the child can exit safely. The volunteer
greets the child with reminders to bring book bags and other belongings and bids
mom or dad goodbye. The car pulls away, and another one takes its place.
The program began in 2001 with the intention of clearing up traffic problems
that created an unsafe environment for the children.
“This really helps with the traffic flow around the building, and parents feel
safe leaving their child at school to line up and wait for the bell,” said
principal Pat Durkin.
