How can you erase the past failures of students who never believed they could learn to read? LANGUAGE!® delivers intensive instruction and a powerful approach that accelerates the reading and writing process. This curriculum supports any student (grades 3–12) who is below the 40th percentile on standardized tests or who requires extra skill practice, such as students with special needs or English learners. This literacy curriculum (text and technology) is specifically designed to achieve reading gains as much as two years in one. Dr. Jane Fell Greene designed and piloted the LANGUAGE! curriculum in 1994–95 with 45 adjudicated minority students, ages 13–17. The controlled study included a non-treatment group of students from the same correctional program (Greene, 1996). Over 22 weeks, students gained significant and noteworthy academic progress in oral reading rate and accuracy, reading comprehension, spelling, and word identification skills. Susan Hall, Media Specialist and Digital Literacy Learning Coach for the National Inventors Hall of Fame Center for STEM Learning, is an advocate for an innovative approach to getting learners interested in reading. As the culmination of their summer reading event, Coach Hall has her students begin by choosing and reading a book over the summer. Once class resumes, the students must try to "sell" that book to their peers. This event is set up similar to a speed dating format; but, instead of selling themselves, they are selling a book (or story) to their classmates. The students have one minute to cajole, entice and convince their classmates to read their book using only props and their own passion for the story.
