SPARK Ohio offers direct support to families with three- and four-year-olds so they can be their children's first and best teachers. This free program prepares children for kindergarten at Leggett, Mason, McEbright, David Hill, Glover and Robinson Community Learning Centers. A Parent Partner visits the family, does screening with the child, and provides parents with activity packets that include books and other learning materials that they can use with their three- and four-year-olds. This year, 66 families with four-year-olds and 60 families with 3-year-olds participated to get their children ready for kindergarten. Since 2008, SPARK has served 313 families. On August 14, 2012, recognition of the 2012 class was held at Leggett Community Learning Center for all APS SPARK programs.

Akron Public Schools recognizes the important role community and parent volunteers play in its students' education. Indeed, it takes many hands to shape a child, and the effect is nowhere as apparent as in the results of the wonderful programs represented this evening. The 14 winners being honored, along with the 28 other nominees, bring to our schools a wealth of knowledge, service and compassion. The Volunteer Recognition Awards, sponsored by the Akron Board of Education and the Business Advisory Council, recognize those who have gone above and beyond in their involvement and contributions. Candidates are nominated by Akron Public Schools personnel in the categories of business, civic organization, individual, PTA and senior citizen. Each person who volunteers his/her time, talent or resources enhances the lives and educations of others. It is no small compliment to be labeled a "volunteer." Without them, the quality of education would diminish.

LeBron James continued to show his support of APS student education with a recent visit to Mason CLC. LeBron gathered children from all over the district to watch a juggler, listen to a reading of "All the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss, and rededicate themselves to the "LeBron" pledge. Superintendent David W. James, ABOE president Curtis Walker and City councilman Marco Sommerville were also in attendance and talked about their appreciation for everything LeBron has done for Akron Public Schools.
