APS faculty, board members and students from all over the district competed in the 7th Annual Cardboard Canoe Competition on Tuesday, March 26. The cardboard canoes competition is the brainchild of Dan Spak, Firestone High School engineering teacher, and is part of the APS Career Education department. The competition, now in it's seventh year, combines all the STEM principles into a single challenge. For the students, it is a wonderful opportunity for them to put their classroom learning into practice. For the adults, it is a chance to have fun and pit their own skills against their kids' skills.

Susan Hall, Media Specialist and Digital Literacy Learning Coach for the National Inventors Hall of Fame Center for STEM Learning, is an advocate for an innovative approach to getting learners interested in reading. As the culmination of their summer reading event, Coach Hall has her students begin by choosing and reading a book over the summer. Once class resumes, the students must try to "sell" that book to their peers. This event is set up similar to a speed dating format; but, instead of selling themselves, they are selling a book (or story) to their classmates. The students have one minute to cajole, entice and convince their classmates to read their book using only props and their own passion for the story.
