Open Enrollment

Akron Public Schools accepts open enrollment transfers from one Akron public school to another and open enrollment transfers from other districts. Students from school districts throughout Ohio (not just surrounding school districts) may apply for open enrollment into Akron Public Schools. All open enrollment guidelines must be met before approval is granted.

Students will be notified in writing in June if their application has been approved or denied.

General Open Enrollment Guidelines and Information:

  • Submitting an open enrollment application does NOT guarantee approval.
  • Open enrollment is based on space availability in a particular grade or school as well as program requirements.
  • Approvals to Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts and Firestone High School, Campus for: International Baccalaureate and Visual & Performing Arts, are based on auditions.
  • STEM acceptance is based on lottery (except STEM middle school students continuing to STEM high school.)
  • Students wishing to enroll in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program must complete an IB application from Firestone. Prerequisite coursework is also required.
  • Students expelled or transferred for disciplinary reasons by the student services office will be denied open enrollment.
  • Students who move out of the district during the year, but wish to remain in the district, must apply for open enrollment.
  • Students wishing to return to APS during the year must show proof of residency to re-enroll.
  • Open enrolling in another school may affect a student’s athletic eligibility.
  • Transportation is not provided for students who open enroll in another school.


Special Programs Requiring Open Enrollment*
:

  • Visual/performing arts programs at Miller South and Firestone
  • STEM high school and middle school
  • Career education programs outside of a student’s home school
  • IB and pre-engineering programs at Firestone
  • Akron Early College High School

 
*Open enrollment not required if student already lives in cluster where they want to attend. 

Applications must be received no later than Friday, December 1, 2017, at 5 p.m. and may be mailed or dropped off to:
