Did you know that certain information included in your child's record is public information? By law, school districts must keep student "directory information" on record. Directory information includes a student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, date of attendance, photograph and date of graduation. In addition, the No Child Left Behind Act requires secondary schools to release a student's name, address and telephone number to universities and military recruiters upon request.

When the media or members of the public request this information, Akron Public Schools officials must release it. However, you have the option to keep this information private.

If you wish to keep your child(ren)'s directory information private, fill out our directory information opt out form; and send it to your child(ren)'s school or to Student Services and Security, Akron Public Schools, 70 N. Broadway, Akron, OH 44308. If you have more than one child in a particular school, a separate notice must be returned for each child.

Also, throughout the year, student photographs, videotapes and quotes may be used in Akron Public Schools publications or by the media. We assume your child can be included in special media events unless you tell us otherwise. If you do not want your child's photo, video, quote or name to be published, you must complete a special media opt out form.

Please direct all questions regarding student privacy to 330/761-2730.

Military Recruiters and Your Child — What You Should Know
Q: What does Congress say about military recruitment of high school students?
A: Congress passed two major pieces of legislation that require many school districts, including Akron Public Schools, to give military recruiters the same access to secondary school students as they provide to post-secondary institutions or to prospective employers. Schools are generally required to give a student’s name, address and telephone number to a military recruiter when requested.

Q: Can a parent or guardian “opt out” of disclosing directory information?
A: Yes. If a parent opts out of providing directory information to third parties, this applies to military recruiters as well. For example, if the opt-out states that telephone numbers will not be disclosed to the public, schools may not disclose telephone numbers to military recruiters.
