History of Schumacher CLC

The state-of-the-art Schumacher Community Learning Center was dedicated on August 31, 2011 and opened its doors for classes on September 1.  Schumacher CLC is named in honor of Ferdinand Schumacher (1822-1908), known as the “Cereal King of America.” He started an oatmeal processing plant on Howard Street and, by 1880, became the foremost miller of the world. Mr. Schumacher later merged his business with the Akron Milling Co and again in 1891, with the American Cereal Co. which, in 1901, became the Quaker Oats Co.
