Akron Public Schools offers opportunities to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Guided by our community-developed Strategic Plan, we stay on track to ensure that students achieve their potential. We offer unique and challenging opportunities for every child – from bright-eyed kindergartners to students who traditionally are too old to attend high school. We have special education programs and programs for specialization in many careers.

Every Akron school offers a comprehensive curriculum that meets state requirements, including language arts, math, social studies, science, the arts, health and physical education. Benchmarks ― I Can Learn! (Back to Top)
Akron is not satisfied just teaching the basics. We set high expectations for all students and have standards for student achievement. Public schools reflect the composition of our community – a mix that reflects the world in which our students will live and work. Gilby (Back to Top)
Gilby is a curious puppy who fetches answers for boys and girls. As young children get to know their new pal, they learn the basics for school. Each show is linked to lessons on colors, numbers, shapes, letters and opposites. High School and Middle School Sports (Back to Top)
Today's employers are looking for team players. Sports are an excellent way for students to learn these skills. Akron Public Schools offers sports at our secondary schools. International Baccalaureate (Back to Top)
The International Baccalaureate program at Firestone High School is a rigorous two-year curriculum designed to meet the highest standards required of any high school student in the world. Firestone is one of 15 high schools in Ohio, 833 in the United States and 2,226 worldwide to offer this prestigious program. All four branches of the armed forces are represented at Akron high schools. Army JROTC is offered at Kenmore, Air Force JROTC at Buchtel, Navy JROTC at Garfield and Marine Corps JROTC at East. Call these schools for more information.

Child nutrition serves more than 1.2 million breakfasts and 3 million lunches each year. The Universal Breakfast Program ensures a free, delicious breakfast for every student. Free lunches are provided to every elementary student in the district. Monthly breakfast and lunch menus, along with the nutrition content of each meal, are online. Akron Public Schools benefits from a wide variety of partnerships. Community agencies provide on-site social services, while hundreds of individuals volunteer to do whatever they can – tutor, read, monitor playgrounds – to contribute to Akron's success. Qualified Teachers (Back to Top)
Akron boasts a highly-qualified teaching staff with an average of more than 16 years in the classroom. Twenty-one Akron teachers were awarded National Board Certification. Besides recruiting good teachers, we train our own through the BECOME program. Minority students receive assistance to pursue education degrees and give back by working as teachers! Akron Public Schools actively pursues community partnerships and resources necessary to support programs and services for students. Individual and district grants bring in millions of dollars to fund classroom projects and student enrichment activities. School counselors assist college-bound students, and each year the graduating classes receive millions of dollars in scholarships.

Thousands of students with disabilities receive a wide variety of individualized special education services in Akron Public Schools. The majority of our students are served in regular classes assisted by interpreters, tutors, speech/language pathologists and special education teachers. Akron Public Schools provides plenty of challenges for gifted and talented students from honors, advanced placement and post-secondary option opportunities to Creative Challenge summer enrichment camps. We have 11 elementary schools and one middle school to choose from: Barrett, Crouse, Erie Island, Findley, Margaret Park, Mason, Perkins (middle), Portage Path, Rankin, Robinson, Schumacher and Stewart. Visual and Performing Arts (Back to Top)
Nearly 700 students participate in visual and performing arts programs at Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts and Firestone High School. Firestone students can earn an arts endorsement on their diploma and transcript. Our students perform at concerts and dance recitals and in a wide variety of music and theatre programs. Zero Tolerance (Back to Top)
Akron Public Schools has zero tolerance for weapons, violence and disruptive behavior. A wide variety of security measures are in place including police in secondary schools, door buzzers and peer mediation to help students to resolve problems peacefully.
