What makes Garfield special?
- Garfield is rated as Effective on the state report
card for two consecutive years!
- Garfield was recognized in 2006-07 for the second
consecutive year as a School of Promise by the Ohio
Department of Education for helping at-risk students
achieve higher scores on the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT).
- 2006 graduates earned $1 million in college
scholarships.
- In 2006-07, Garfield was ranked in the Top 100
schools of the 1,028 high schools in the national High
Schools That Work network.
- In 2005-06, Garfield was chosen by the International
Center for Education as one of 75 Schools of Promise in
the United States.
- In 2004-05, Project Lead the Way (PLTW), Garfield's
pre-engineering/pre-architecture program, became a
national certified program, which allows students to
earn 4 credits per course ―
totaling 16 credits throughout the program
― and which is accepted by 25+
universities nationwide.
- Garfield has a number of
intervention opportunities for students. There are
intervention classes in math, science and language arts.
Extra help has been provided for all students during
study hall with core teachers. As a result, OGT scores
have improved, helping Garfield achieve "Effective"
status on the state report card.
- Attendance has been 93% or better
for the past two years according to the Ohio state
report card.
- Garfield offers Career Pathways
exploration programs in business technology, health
services, human resources, and industrial and
engineering technology.
- Garfield offers Career Education
programs in medical technology, business, graphics,
marketing, cosmetology, information technology, auto
body, machining, computer-aided drafting, restaurant
management and pre-engineering/pre-architectures.
- With over 500 computers, there is
one computer for every three students.
- 100% of staff participated in
in-house staff development for technology and improving
higher expectations for all students.
- Garfield has placed all ninth-
and 10th-graders with teams of teachers in the four core
academic areas in order to help create better
relationships, provide rigorous assignments and allow
teachers to have cross-curricular activities, helping to
create relevancy in the classroom.

higher.

- Named in honor of President James A. Garfield
(1831-81)
- Garfield High School was named for James A.
Garfield, 20th president of the United States. The
school was formally dedicated on November 19, 1926.
James R. Garfield, the son of the slain president, gave
the principal address at the ceremony. In 1966, Garfield
High School became the first comprehensive high school
in Akron when it opened an addition for vocational
education facilities.
