What makes North special?
- North has moved up three steps on the state report
card over the past three years!
- North significantly raised
academic expectations. Overall enrollment in
honors-level courses has quadrupled over a three-year
period.
- Survey data shows the increased academic
expectations demanded at North are accompanied by
increased self-confidence among students.
- The staff is innovative and unafraid to try new
approaches to deliver better service to students and
parents. Offsite parent conferences, total restart at
the end of the semester, team teaching, full inclusion
for special education students and exemplary group
counseling
are examples of approaches seen only at North.
- North's pioneering 2004-05 discipline plan resulted
in better behavior while reducing total suspension days
by 20%.
- North's Ohio Graduation Test scores improved by
14% in writing and social studies and 9% in science.
- During the 2005-06 school year, North
raised academic expectations by requiring a C or better
before a student earns Algebra I or ninth-grade English
credits. These courses provide the foundation for so
much of what follows that those with below-average
mastery of these subjects will be sorely handicapped in
future courses.
- North's Knowledge Bowl team finished fifth at the
state tournament.
- North's Viking Newspaper finished third in a field
of more than 60 high schools at a Kent State University
competition.
- North embraces its diverse population, which
reflects the entire city. Students receive rich,
enhanced learning experiences both academically and
socially.
- 2006 graduates earned $343,000 in college
scholarships.
- Teachers have an average of 17 years of experience,
and 64% hold a master's degree or higher.
History
- Constructed in 1931
- Additions in 1953, 1964 and 1970
- North High School was originally located at what is
now Jennings Middle School. In 1931, the present North
High School was built on Gorge Boulevard. The new
building housed 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students.
The school then officially became North High School. Two
wars and a depression delayed the completion of the
building for 24 years. In 1955, a major addition
including an auditorium, cafeteria and gymnasium was
completed. Then in 1970, a vocational wing was added;
and, in September 1972, North High School became a
four-year high school once again.
