Akron Early College High School

- Akron Early College High School is a new approach to high school where
students earn a high school diploma and an associate's degree at the same
time. Classes are taught at The University of Akron by a combination of high
school teachers and college professors. The program is geared to students
who have not traditionally sought higher education. AECHS is for
first-generation college applicants and is free of charge to any eligible
Akron Public Schools student. Akron Early College High School is located at

Akron Opportunity Center

- Akron Opportunity Center, a new program at APS, opened in the fall of
2007. The program targets middle school students who are struggling
academically in the regular classroom setting and may need assistance with
behavior issues. The school opened with 100 middle school students – 40
students in seventh grade and 60 students in eighth grade. No IEP students
will be included in the opening year. AOC has four full-time and four
part-time teachers along with a full-time child guidance staff member and a
full-time counselor as well as pastoral counseling. Each class is 60 minutes
in length and will include four content areas. Physical education, art,
music, career education and 100 Book Challenge are also offered. AOC is

- Phoenix School
– Students whose behavior is unruly may be referred to the Phoenix Program.
Phoenix offers academic instruction coupled with intense behavior
management; call 330/784-0408.
- Saturn School
– Saturn offers an opportunity for students who have been expelled for
non-violent offenses to continue their education in a highly structured

FACCT – Children with severe emotional and/or behavioral
problems may be eligible for placement in this community-based, alternative
day treatment-oriented program. FACCT provides students and their families
with the level of support necessary to make the transition back to a regular

Olympus – Secondary special education students who
persistently display behavior which interferes with learning may be assigned
to this half-day program. Olympus includes academic instruction coupled with
behavior modification and social skill development; call Denise Sandmann at 330/761-3260.
