What makes the Resnik CLC special?
- The new Judith A. Resnik Community Learning Center
opened December 18, 2006.
- We have focused on a theme that ties all that we do
together. SPACE stands for "Students Participating in
Academics through Creative Exploration."
- Resnik's staff is dedicated to helping students achieve
their fullest potential. Various instructional strategies
such as differentiation of instruction are implemented in
classrooms to meet the educational needs of every student.
- Continuous staff development is provided for staff members
so that current teaching practices are implemented to meet
the needs of all our students.
- An active PTA contributes to the success of Resnik students!
- The school is the recipient of numerous grants such as the
Educator Initiative Grant.
- The 100 Book Challenge aids every classroom because
students read at their "just-right" level. That motivates
and instills a love of reading in students.
- Planners and newsletters aid school-home communication.
- Resnik benefits from strong community partnerships with AkronReads, The University of Akron, Target and many more!
- The school received a state award for reading. We were
recognized as a state "School of Promise," distinguished in
the area of reading, for the 2005-06 school year.
- We are linked with resources from Exxon Mobile, NASA and
COSI to strengthen our reading, writing, math and science
skills.
- We celebrate successes here with a parent/student
luncheon every grading period to honor our students of
outstanding character.
- We had three teachers who were selected as the
district's Teachers of the Year in 1996, 1999 and 2006.
- Teachers have an average of 23 years of experience, and
84% hold a master's degree or higher.
History
- Original building constructed in 1929
- Originally part of Portage Township
- Annexed by the city of Akron in 1931
- Additions in 1949, 1952, 1954, 1958 (primary unit) and
1972 (LRC)
- In 1931, the city of Akron extended its western boundary
to include Fairlawn School, once a part of Portage Township
and named for the village of Fairlawn. This area can trace
its "school" to the 1820s. The "new, modern building"
constructed in 1929 contains, in its cornerstone, the names
of the children and teachers of the school and a history of
Portage Township.
- Groundbreaking for new (Judith A. Resnik) building on November
12, 2005; ribbon-cutting ceremony on
December 16, 2006; classes started in new building on December
18, 2006
