What makes Ritzman special?
- Ritzman is among the top schools in Akron Public Schools
with regard to the percentage of students proficient in all
five sections of the Ohio Proficiency Test.
- Ritzman was instrumental in winning a Network for Systemic
Improvement Continuation grant from the Ohio Department of
Education for the Ellet Cluster.
- Ritzman is one of the schools selected by the Ohio
Department of Education to be involved in an
Intervention-Based Assessment Model. This model involves
group problem-solving in which intervention specialists and
regular classroom teachers work together to help classroom
teachers provide specialized programs and interventions for
students having difficulty in school.
- Every adult in the school is responsible for the education
of every child. Parent volunteers are an integral part of
the IBAT project.
- Academic strength through enhanced learning opportunities
is a priority at Ritzman. Extended-day academic classes in
reading and math, Ritzman's new Reading Counts
program, and Title 1-sponsored tutors demonstrate the
school's commitment to provide a comprehensive program for
its students.
- The new Ritzman Community Learning Center is under
construction.
- Teachers have an average of 23 years of experience, and
68% hold a master's degree or higher.
History
- Constructed in 1891 (as the original Ellet High School,
subsequently demolished)
- Additions in 1895 (subsequently demolished), 1916, 1921,
1952 and 1964
- Renamed in honor of John Curtis Ritzman (1875-1963)
- John C. Ritzman went to work for the Ellet Township
Board of Education in 1913. From 1929 to his retirement in
1944, he served as a custodian for Ellet High School.
Shortly after the new high school was constructed, additions
were made to the old building. The Ellet community decided
to show their admiration for the many years of loyal service
which Ritzman had provided the district by renaming the
building in his honor.
