What makes Stewart special?
- Stewart is the only African-centered school in Northeast Ohio. Staff were selected for their desire to work in an African-centered
environment.
- Harambee (gathering of the village) is held each morning to
emphasize unity and togetherness.
- The seven principles of the Nguzo Saba are emphasized: Umoja
(unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and
responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba
(creativity) and Imani (faith.
- An active Council of Elders serves as a resource for staff, parents
and students.
- Stewart boasts a board of advisers composed of nationally-recognized
consultants in the field of African-centered education.
- A strong academic program regularly monitors student achievement.
- Parents, community, staff and students participate in Rites of
Passage training.
- A resident musician helps students develop language skills by
teaching them to write and perform blues music.
- Students develop a strong sense of self and purpose through studying
African history and culture.
- Students learn money management through a banking program with First
Merit Bank.
- Village workshops provide information on parenting, proficiency
testing and community collaboration.
- Stewart has an active PTA, Council of Elders and a uniform dress code.
- Stewart offers after-school programs like tutoring, Cub Scouts,
African drumming and dancing, and basketball.
- Teachers have an average of 26 years of experience, and 74% hold a
master's degree or higher.
History
- Constructed in 1968
- Opened in September 1968
- Named in honor of Horace St. John Stewart (1897-1968)
- The life-long avocation and vocation of Horace St. John Stewart ― a
well-known African-American leader in Akron ― was photography. He came
to Akron and established a photography studio here in 1932. He was a
member of the Professional Photographers Association of America. Stewart
made significant contributions to the public and social welfare of Akron
through service on various boards and committees, including the
Community Service Center, the Urban League and the Glendale Branch of
the Welfare Board. He also was a life-long member of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
