Since the founding of Akron in 1825, innovation has driven the advancement of the city's economy. Today, Akron is known as the "polymer valley" of the Midwest. Major polymer research and development takes place in 400 polymer-related companies employing thousands. Over 150 Fortune 500 companies have facilities in greater Akron, with four headquartered here, as well as many of the nation's most important manufacturers in such diverse fields as aerospace, nuclear power, metals, plastics and chemicals. No wonder Akron was selected for the site of the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1995.
