Calamity Days Alternative Make-Up Plan for the 2020-21 School Year
Should the planned calendar be interrupted by severe weather events or school closure due to lack of power, water or other declared emergency, the Board puts into place alternative plans for the students to make up for loss of educational instruction and/or loss of required instructional time.
Pursuant to Sections 3317.01 and 3313.48 of the Ohio Revised Code and HB 416, Akron Public Schools must plan for Alternative Make-Up of Calamity Days by providing students a sufficient number of lessons for each course taught by the teacher with such lessons requiring, in the judgment of the teachers, an amount of time equal to or greater than the amount of instructional time the student would receive for three (3) school days in the teacher's classroom. These lesson plans are developed by the Teaching and Learning Department in collaboration with classroom teachers. Teachers designate the order in which the lessons are to be posted on the district's Web portal or website. Students shall be granted a two-week period from the date of the lesson plan posting to complete their work. Students not having access to online instructions will be able to complete the posted lessons at school after the reopening of school. Use of "Blizzard Bags," which are paper copies of online posted lessons, may also occur. This plan includes the written consent of the teachers' employee representative as designated under Division (B) of Section 4117.04, which his kept in the official file of the Board of Education.
Alternative Calendar
Should additional hours of instruction be required, an Alternate School Calendar is also put into place. For the 2020-21 school year, the proposed makeup days are as follows:
Calamity Days:
- 1st-5th Days Make-Up Days During Week of June 7, 2021
- 6th-10th Days Make-Up Days During Week of June 14, 2021
- 11th-15th Days Make-Up Days During Week of April 5, 2021
- 16th-20th Days Make-Up Days During Week of June 21, 2021
Adjustments to the first day that students report to school does delay the start of the school year. These adjustments to the school calendar do not affect the required hours of educational instruction by grade level. The adjustments to the school calendar, however, will affect the number of days by grade level available for a declared calamity that may institute the use of the alternative make-up school day schedule earlier than expected should a calamity declaration be of extended length.
