Summit Education Initiative Offers Volunteer Opportunities

Image of VolunteeringSummit Education Initiative (SEI) has three volunteer opportunities for working professionals and community members. SEI is a nonprofit organization working to enhance the educational experiences of individuals and their families living in Summit County to help ensure every student graduates prepared, passionate and persistent, according to SEI officials. The opportunities this month offer volunteers with limited time a way to make a lasting impact on student success.
  • Volunteer as a Math Challenge facilitator. You don’t have to be a math genius to facilitate a math challenge. As a facilitator, you will work with small groups of students as they engage in one specific math challenge activity. Teachers and principals will provide supervision and encouragement. These challenges are a way to connect directly with students. Volunteers will attend a one-hour training session before the event to learn everything they need to know. Visit seisummit.org/math-challenge to sign up.
  • Contribute a written personal story or reflection for students. Your education, work and life experiences are valuable and can teach students a lot. By sharing personal stories, you can inspire and motivate students to believe in themselves and maintain a positive outlook on life. Visit seisummit.org/story-advice to submit a story for review and possible publication in a book for use in middle school classrooms.
  • Volunteer to be interviewed for SEI’s career awareness video project. Do you remember what profession you thought you would pursue back when you were age 13? A middle school student may be interested to find out how that compares to what you are doing now. SEI is looking for employees of businesses and organizations in different industries that require varying levels of education to share their stories on video. Visit seisummit.org/career-interview to complete a brief questionnaire about your background. You may be featured in a short video for use in classrooms across Summit County.
