United Way of Summit County (UWSC) has kicked off its sixth annual Stuff the Bus school supplies drive.

UWSC officials said the Stuff the Bus program collects, sorts, packs and distributes backpacks full of school supplies to Akron Public Schools (APS) students. Last year, the event brought together 52 companies and collected enough supplies to fill 7,350 backpacks — one for every student at 23 of APS’s 28 elementary schools. With more companies committed to supporting the drive this year, UWSC officials hope to collect supplies for more than 10,500 students at all school buildings.

The collection drive will continue through August and end with a sort-a-thon Aug. 21. That day, volunteers will sort pencils, pens, notebooks and notes of encouragement, and more and pack them into new backpacks to be distributed by volunteers Sept. 4.

Anyone seeking a collection bin for school supplies or willing to volunteer to help sort the donated items can visit uwsummit.org/volunteer.

UWSC officials said Stuff the Bus, which is sponsored by Steere Enterprises, supports UWSC’s Bold Goals by 2025 initiative by ensuring students have the tools they need to succeed in the classroom, boosting third-grade reading proficiency among APS students, and increasing the number of APS students who graduate high school in four years and are prepared for college or careers.
