At the December 9, 2019, school board meeting, University of Akron President Gary L. Miller addressed the meeting briefly to say how proud he is of the affiliation between the university and Akron Public Schools that has led AECHS to being one of only three schools in Ohio to receive this distinction. It is the school's second such designation in the last six years.

AECHS Principal Cheryl Connolly brought much of her staff to the board meeting and talked about her love of education, students and her school. Akron Early College is on the campus of UA in what used to be the Polsky's Department Store Building that faces South Main Street to the west and South High Street to the east.

Students at Akron Early College High School take college classes on campus and APS classes in the Polsky Building. When they graduate, each student has a high school diploma and a two-year college degree.
