What O'Henry's Brings to Education

On the walls of his Irish-themed poster board store, Henry Hunsicker hung orange, green and white beaded bracelets, magnets and shamrock-shaped glasses made of pipe cleaners.

His O’Henry’s store also featured a bowl of gold-wrapped Dove chocolates and a sign to alert buyers that a piece of candy came free with any purchase.

“It’s the pot of gold that draws people in,” Henry said as he counted his loot at the end of the class period.

The budding entrepreneur was selling his classmates goods connected with Ireland, the country of his heritage.

Students in the fourth grade at Akron’s King Community Learning Center this week each ran their own storefront in the theme of a country of their choosing.

They had to research their country, create inventory, market their products, sell goods to their classmates and count their profits. The lesson was a cross-section of academic and social skills the school is imparting on students through its newly authorized International Baccalaureate program. Read more of the story here >>.
