History Lessons That Go Beyond Classroom

An Akron author’s new book celebrates the artistic genius of a former Beacon Journal editorial cartoonist.

“World War II Cartoons of Akron’s Web Brown,” a 128-page paperback published by The History Press of Arcadia Publishing, will be released Monday, April 20.

Tim Carroll, 37, is a Highland Square resident who graduated from Firestone High School and majored in history at The University of Akron. His first book, “World War II Akron,” published in 2019, paved the way for the second.

“When I was doing my research for ‘World War II Akron,’ I was going through the newspaper archives quite a bit, and I stumbled across several of Web’s cartoons,” Carroll said. “I found him interesting. I didn’t even know he had worked for the Beacon.”

Daniel Webster Brown was born Jan. 28, 1876, on Vine Street in Akron. You could say that art ran in the family. He was the great-grandson of Jim Brown, the notorious counterfeiter from Summit County. Read more here >>.
