Project Rise is a federally funded program through the Ohio Department of Education. This program is a collaborative effort between Akron Public Schools, local shelters and the Akron community to provide supplemental educational services to children and youth experiencing homelessness. The primary goal of Project Rise is to remove barriers to the education of homeless youth, which the organization has continued to do during the COVID-19 disruption.

Project Rise will use the Purposity app to help families in the program with specific needs. This may include doubled-up families (families who are staying with friends/relatives due to housing loss), families exiting shelter, unaccompanied youth, etc. Needs may include school supplies, diapers, winter items like boots/hats/gloves, a laptop for an unaccompanied teen entering college, etc.

Shannah Carino, Akron Public Schools District Homeless Education Liaison, explained: “Generous community members are always asking us how they can help and what our families need. This app is a great way for these supporters to stay in touch and choose which needs they would like to fill.”

It’s no coincidence that Project Rise pursued becoming a Purposity partner during the COVID-19 pandemic. Families of all socio-economic backgrounds are struggling during this time, and the weight of the crisis falls extra heavily on families living in poverty and without stable housing. Many Project Rise families are experiencing job loss, eviction, food instability and lack of resources.

Joining the app is easy – simply download the Purposity App in the App Store , select Ohio as your community, then go to 'orgs' at the bottom. There you will see Akron Public Schools - Project Rise. Once Project Rise has 200 followers, our needs will “go live” to our followers.

During the 2019-20 school year, more than 2,100 students were identified and served. For more information on Project Rise and how you can help, please contact Rachel Breece at 330.761.2969 or rbreece@apslearns.org.
