It’s that time of year, when students across the country are celebrating milestones, moving on and moving up. For our I PROMISE students in Akron, this moment has been years in the making.

Back in 2011, the Class of 2021 seemed like such a distant reality. With the Foundation turning its attention to education and improving graduation rates, we didn’t know exactly how we were going to make a change. But we knew change was needed and that we’d do whatever it takes to make it happen. We were also blessed with our first group of third-graders and their families who trusted us enough to join the journey from the beginning. Since that time, we’ve been listening and learning as we go, with this first class of I PROMISE students setting the standard and shaping so much of our work.

And now here we are, with the Class of 2021 getting ready to graduate and move on to their next chapter in life. For some, that means accepting the full ride scholarship to either The University of Akron or Kent State University they earned through a commitment to their academics and their community. For others, that means joining the work force or pursuing their passion through a trade or the military. And some of our students will continue pursuing their education and persevering toward completion.Image of I Promise Grads

For ALL of them, it means they did it. It means they beat the odds. It means they didn’t grow up to become a statistic as the second-grade data predicted. It means they persevered and changed the course of their future for the better.

And we couldn’t be more proud to be a part of their journey as they continue on to whatever life brings them next. And we will remain right there by their side. Once an I PROMISE student, always an I PROMISE student.

Other members of the Class of 2021 include our graduating senior 330 Ambassadors who have dedicated their time and talents to serving LeBron’s students across the community. While they’ve stayed committed to their own work and futures at their schools, they’ve also committed to our kids at the I PROMISE School and our LJFF families in various ways throughout the year. They are standouts in their class and in their fields: Alex Knight just set a new record for the 400 meter dash in his first-place finish at the D-1 boys' district track meet, and Andrew Morse was selected to the All-State Baseball team – and they took their roles as mentors and leaders to the younger students seriously.

This year, graduation season takes on a whole new meaning for our growing family. And we can’t wait to see what they accomplish next!
