Of the group of 11, the following four teachers were selected as state finalists to be considered for recognition as Ohio’s Teacher of the Year for 2022. Among the four finalists is Akron Public Schools teacher Maggie Oliver, who teaches at Helen Arnold CLC and was the APS Teacher of the Year in 2020.

  • Allison Tomlin, Upper Arlington City Schools, State Board District 6
  • Maggie Oliver, Akron Public Schools, State Board District 7
  • Carla Neely, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, State Board District 11
Akron Public Schools (APS) Superintendent Christine Fowler Mack said today, "All of APS is proud of Maggie. She was clearly an appropriate choice in 2020 for Teacher of the Year in our district, and we are confident she is the best choice for this honor statewide. She exemplifies the model of a teacher completely dedicated to her craft."

“I’m continually blown away by Ohio’s teachers and the enthusiasm, creativity and skill they exemplify for our students," State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria said. “We honor the work they do each and every day, but it’s especially momentous when we get to recognize district and regional Teachers of the Year. I always say these individuals are the best of the best, and it’s true! I’ve met many amazing Ohio teachers, and it is a great honor for these educators to be recognized as some of the best among such an incredible field.”

“We are so fortunate to have wonderful teachers throughout the state who encourage and inspire our students every day,” said Ohio State Board of Education President Laura Kohler. “I’m proud and delighted to congratulate this year’s district and regional Teachers of the Year. These awards recognize not only their individual contributions to our students and our collective future but also the contributions of all of Ohio’s outstanding teachers.”

School administrators, fellow educators, parents, students and community members nominated teachers for the district awards. A State Board of Education member representing each district or volunteer staff from area educational service centers worked with local committees of educators, and often parents and business leaders, to select the district’s awardee.

An Ohio panel of education and community stakeholders will interview the four state finalists from the State Board district awardees to select the Ohio Teacher of the Year. The state superintendent will announce the statewide honoree this fall.

The Ohio Teacher of the Year will represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year selection in spring 2022, sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers.
