Image of Leadership SymposiumAkron Public Schools and its scholar athletes met in the APS Leadership Symposium attended by athletes from all six high schools. The session was held at the administration building on North Main, and its focus was simply to provide the opportunity for a positive exchange of ideas and thoughts between student athletes and APS staff.

Meeting in small groups, students talked about how they see their schools and what ideas they had to make improvements. Superintendent Christine Fowler Mack delivered an inspirational welcome to the students, reminding them of her youth spent in Akron Public Schools and her later APS experiences as a teacher and a coach. Fowler Mack also spoke to the athletes about strong leadership, why it matters and just how it can make a difference in the lives of people.

The event offered break-out sessions by Dr. Erica Glover, Megan Mannion and Yvonne Culver. Caitlin Castle served as moderator while Secondary Education Director Mark Black added instructions for the day.

The 60 participants were hand-picked by their respective schools as potential leaders. APS Athletics Director Joe Vassalotti closed the day with inspiring remarks on leadership and athletics. We are looking forward to their return in the spring for part two of the APS Leadership Symposium.
