Middle school students and Business Professionals of America scholars from Buchtel Community Learning Center represented Akron Public Schools at the State Leadership Conference in Columbus recently.
Shown, from left, seventh-graders Yi’la Boswell and Dierre Watkins competed in Keyboard Production; and eighth-grader Gage Shaffer competed in Prepared Speech. All were coached by Buchtel instructional specialist Desiree Reynolds.
School officials explained that, in keyboard production, students are provided three non-formatted messages that they have to type out and turn into properly formatted documents. They are judged on how well they prepare, type and format based on the proper style as they produce the documents. Gage and Yi’la were first-place winners in their categories and will advance to the National Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas, in May.
