Trevon Stephens can still remember the details of the day he met Kyle Ferguson, all the way down to the exact date.

“It was September 5 around this time,” Stephens recalled one recent afternoon as he and Ferguson, 17, sat side-by-side after their last choir practice as the school year recently came to an end at Kenmore-Garfield High School.

“I could tell who were the Kenmore kids and who weren’t,” he said. “The difference between the Kenmore kids and Kyle was the minute I walked in, Kyle instantly greeted me.”

Like hundreds of other Akron seniors, Stephens, 18, was uprooted from Garfield High School for the 2017-18 school year — his last year of high school — to merge with the student body at Kenmore High School in a contentious move by the district.

Inside the choir room, though, the tension between students died down amid the music, and Stephens found an unlikely friend in the process.

At the beginning of the school year, Stephens and Ferguson, who has autism, overlooked their apparent differences and instead bonded over their similarities: their deep bass voices, their commitment to choir and their positive attitudes as the two Akron high schools became one.

The merger received backlash from community members and students.

But Ferguson said he felt OK about joining with another student body. “It was nice to have Garfield come to us,” he said.

Stephens was a little worried about starting his senior year at a new school, but the worry was quickly diminished by the first day.

“I was a little sad, because I thought we’d get to stay at Garfield, but everything just got put into place when I met Kyle,” Stephens said. “We instantly clicked just off the bat. I knew from that day that me and him were going to be friends.” Read more >>.
