Project RISE Donates Mats

APS Student Project Benefits Homeless
Posted on 06/21/2018
Image of Project RISE Mat CreationAPS students made sleeping mats out of plastic bags as a service project, which were then donated to the Haven of Rest to benefit the homeless. The students were part of Teddy Nantambi Mwonyonyi's family and consumer sciences class at Buchtel CLC. The students were given a tour of the Haven of Rest and lunch after the donation. Each mat took more than 24 hours to complete, made by twisting and then crocheting the bags together (a practice known as Plarn, or plastic yarn). Seven mats had been completed at the time of the donation, and several more were being finished at the school.
