With the paint barely dry on its last transformational Akron mural, The University of Akron Art Bomb Brigade has undertaken its largest public art installment to date.

Students recently stenciled color and design on more than 4,000 square feet of exterior walls on Market Street, Maiden Lane and High Street over a city block in the Historic Arts District.

Work was just finished on a 3,000-foot mural at Community Support Services of Summit County at 150 Cross St.

Led by Art Bomb founder and Director Elisa Gargarella, and working with a creative team comprising Marissa McClellan, Dan Coffield and Steve Ehret, the 23 students filled the block with street art in the historic Akron district over two weeks.

While artists were working on the street, UA students and teens from Akron Public Schools Arts LIFT program, a summer-arts apprenticeship program also founded by Gargarella, worked at UA's Myers School of Art maker space, creating stencils for the spray painting.

"I developed these arts-outreach programs to bring together urban students, teachers, artists and creative leaders to work with community partners in positively changing our city one space at a time," Gargarella said in a news release. "It is my hope that the public art we've generated has inspired many small enterprises and non-profits to invest in the creative assets of our region's young people and local artists and to building a more interesting, culturally and economically rich city."

The current art project was funded through a grant to Downtown Akron Partnership by the Knight Foundation for "spacelifts."

In May, Downtown Akron Partnership hosted its first spacelift, with a vivid mural painted on the street on the old leg of North Main in the Northside Arts District. Community volunteers painted a design created by Akron artist April Couch onto the roadway.

In keeping with Art Bomb Brigade tradition, a free public unveiling of the freshly painted Historic Arts District block will be held at the site from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 19. The event will feature live music, food trucks, community art projects and local vendors.

Previous Art Bomb murals are located at Community Support Services, Chill Gourmet Ice Cream on Maiden Lane, Downtown Akron Laundromat on South Main Street, the Akron Sustainer, an educational hub in a shipping crate promoting green living; Echogen Power Systems at Lock 1; Metro Parks Freedom Trail trailhead; Land of Plenty and the Barberton Public Library.
