The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. The social studies curriculum is research- and standards-based with high expectations for all.

The department coordinates:

  • curriculum, instruction and assessment.
  • professional development.
  • instructional materials and textbooks.
  • district field trips.

The study of social studies includes:

  • the development of skills such as geo-spatial thinking, economic decision-making, historical thinking and civic participation.
  • a safe environment that fosters participation.
  • student-centered and authentic, real-life connections.
  • the development of creating a thesis and supporting it with analysis and critical thinking.
  • a standards-based learning environment that includes close connections to literacy skills.
  • a variety of instructional strategies such as role-play, simulations, problem-based learning, cooperative learning, projects and teacher-/student-led discussions.
  • the use of opposing viewpoints in formulating opinions.
  • a variety of learning methods that address different styles for a diverse student population.
  • the inclusion of technology to both understand and participate in our democracy.

Our students' success in the social studies is critical to the future success of our schools, our Akron Community and our nation.
