Ohio's Learning Standards for English Language Arts

In June 2010, the Ohio State Board of Education adopted Ohio's New Learning Standards, including the Common Core State Standards for English and language arts. The standards went into effect at the start of the 2014-15 school year.

The standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn and so teachers, students and parents know what they need to do to be successful.

Developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators and education experts, the standards serve as important benchmarks to ensure that all students are receiving high-quality education and are well prepared for college and career. Students are assessed on a regular basis throughout their school career to monitor their progress toward meeting these benchmarks.

Parent Guides to Student Success offer parents an example of the new standards and the knowledge and skills children will gain at each grade level, as well as activities they can do with each student to reinforce learning at home: Parent Roadmaps K-8 give an in-depth look at what children are learning and how parents may support them, presented by the Council of the Great City Schools.

The Teaching Channel has videos to take you inside English and math classrooms so you may see how Common Core works and how teachers are adapting.
